Antiopi "Popi" Perlegas's Obituary

Antiopi (Popi) Perlegas was born on July 20, 1936 in the village of Kamares, Greece, the youngest of five children of Nicholas and Angeliki (Spanos) Perlegas.  Growing up during World War II, she experienced the poverty and deprivations of the German occupation, which resulted in the death of two of her young brothers.  She overcame these hardships, completed high school there, and remained in Greece through the 1960's.

After caring for her mother through a long illness, she immigrated to Cambridge MA in the early 1970's to join her sister Eva.  Popi adjusted quickly to her new life, becoming fluent in English and working for several years for Polaroid Corporation.  Over the years she and her brother Panagiotis, who came to the US several years after her, acquired rental property, which they jointly managed.  During the 1980's, she became an active member of the Cambridge Small Property Owners Association.  She was also an active member of the Sts. Constantine and Helen Church community for many years.

Popi was a gregarious person who loved people.  Their apartment in Cambridge became a home away from home for many friends and relatives who visited from Greece.  It also provided a sanctuary and a taste of home for many of their tenants, who came from all over the world to study or work in Cambridge and became their friends.  After living in Cambridge for over 40 years, Popi and her brother retired to a Senior Living community in Framingham in 2016.  She lost her beloved brother in 2021.

Popi is survived by her cousins, Evangeline Spanos of Jamaica Plain and Evanthea Spanos of South Portland, ME, her neice and nephew Robert and Paula Spanos and their families, and numerous other nieces, nephews and friends in Greece and in the Boston area.
