Obituary

Anthony Nicholas Aggouras, of W.Yarmouth and Holiday, FL, formerly of Arlington, MA, passed away on Feb. 19, 2015. Beloved husband of Eugenia (Bourikas) Aggouras. Devoted father of Nicholas Aggouras and his wife Barbara, Charles Aggouras and his wife Lisa and George Aggouras and his wife Karen. Cherished grandfather of Jeanne, Anthony N., Edward, Alexis, Andrew, Madelyn, Catherine and Anthony G. Aggouras. Brother of Yanni Aggouras and his wife Voula, Katina Kalivas and her husband Panagioti, Demetra Sparages and her husband James, the late Eleni Anastasopolous and her late husband Thanasi, brother-in-law to Vasili Bourikas and his wife Maria. Also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends here and in Greece. Anthony was born in Miropotamia, Kalamata, Greece, where he grew up on his father's olive farm during WWII. As a young adult in Greece he served as a policeman and was very involved in the Greek Orthodox church. In 1961 he left Greece for the United States with his new wife Eugenia. Knowing little English and with very little money, he started work in a shoe factory and then later as a machinist. Eventually he saved enough money to start a small market in Cambridge with his brother-in-law Vasili. Later he opened Anthony's Greek Market in Central Square, which became a mainstay of the local Greek and American community for decades until he sold it in 1981. However, his retirement did not last long. In 1985 he opened a new market with his three sons called A&A Convenient Store on Mass. Ave in Arlington. The family business was sold in 2005, several years after Anthony and his wife finally retired to devote their time to family, friends and their garden. Funeral from the Faggas Funeral Home, 551 Mt. Auburn St., Watertown, MA on Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2015 at 9am followed by Services in St. Athanasius The Great Greek Orthodox Church, 14 Appleton St., Arlington, MA. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the above named church or to the Hellenic Cardiac Children's Fund, c/o Children's Hospital, 200 Longwood Ave., Boston, MA.
