Obituary

Afroditi (Clessas) Dratsioti was born on March 14, 1931 in Naoussa, Macedonia, Greece. She was the second child of Evangelia and Epaminondas Clessas. She lived a difficult life from early in life. In her teen years, she was forced to leave her birth country because of political turmoil to follow the man of her life. They started a family in Hungary where they had to survive learning a new language and working long hours in manual type work along with other compatriots and two young children. She was 21 when she had her first child. A few years later and with two young children, they returned to their birth country for a 10 year period. During their first year back in Greece, their third child was born. Initially they lives with her mother, until she helped them with their own house. Prior to their youngest child's 9th year birthday, they immigrated to the US with the help of her oldest brother Christos and they settled in Jamaica Plain, Mass. They resided in the same house for several years before retiring and moving back to Naoussa, Greece until her husbands death in 1994. Once again, she was faced with a new set of challenges like a new language, new lifestyle, three growing children, and hard work. Despite all her struggles, she chose to live life full of love, unselfishness, gratitude, and generosity. She then moved back to Massachusetts and lived with her daughter. Initially , she was still able to travel and she would go back and forth to Greece, where her children in the US would visit her, or she would go to California and visit her son Nondas and his family or they would visit her either in Greece or Massachusetts. She spent the last two years at the Blair House in Tewksbury, MA where she peacefully passed away in the company of her two children, Nondas and Kathy. She loved her children and grandchildren dearly and unconditionally. She willingly gave them what she felt necessary for their well being without asking for anything in return. She will be remembered by them for her delicious baked goods like tiropita, spanakopita, koulorakia, and vasilopita. During her spare time she would be sitting in front of the television set knitting all sorts of doillies for the furniture and baby blankets and sweater sets. She is survived by her children, Vasilis and his wife Kathy of Naoussa, Greece, Nondas and his wife Martha of Riverside, CA and Cathy and her husband Perry of Billerica, Mass. She is the loving yiayia of Yiannis and Bobby Dratsiotis, Nicholas Yiannis Dratsiotis and George and Athena Karipidis.
